How to Buy Audible Gift Credits

If you’re looking to buy Audible credits as a gift, it is a really simple process. But before we start, you should know a few things about this method of gifting credits:

  1. If the person you are giving the credits to does not already have an Audible membership, they will receive credits + an Audible subscription for the length of time you selected to give them (1, 3, 6, or 12 months). Remember they get 1 credit per month, and 1 credit = 1 book.
  2. If the person you are giving the credits to already has an active Audible subscription, they will not receive the credits month-by-month and will not receive an extension to their current subscription. Instead, they will receive all the credits at the time of gifting (so, for instance, if you give “6 months” to them they will receive 6 credits all at once when they redeem your gift).

The way gift memberships/credits work like this can make it a bit confusing to gift credits, but either way the gift of Audible credits will make an excellent gift. And the actual process of gifting the credits is easy to do, so follow the step by step guide below to gift Audible credits in a snap!

1. Go to the Audible Gift Subscription Page

When buying Audible credits as a gift, you first need to go to the Audible gift subscription page. You can find it here.

2. Choose the Audible Subscription Length/Number of Books

Your next step is to choose the subscription length/number of books you would like to give. Your options are 1, 3, 6, or 12 months (which is equal to 1, 3, 6, or 12 books respectively…because 1 month = 1 credit = 1 book). Once you’ve chosen how many credits/books you want to give, click the orange “Continue” button.

3. Enter Recipient’s Details on the Customize Your Gift Membership Page

After clicking the “Continue” button, you’ll be taken to the Customize Your Gift Membership Page. On this page, you have the option to choose between emailing your gift to the recipient or printing out the information and delivering it yourself.

Then, fill in the requested details including recipient’s name and email, the delivery date (anytime within a year from the date of purchase), and personalize a short gift message if you wish.

On this page, you can also choose from a myriad of design options to customize the look of the gift that will be sent to your recipient. It’s fun, and is kind of like choosing which gift card design you like! But once you’ve finished entering these details, click the orange “Continue to checkout” button.

4. Confirm Your Purchase

On this last step of buying your Audible credits gift, you can review the membership you’re adding to the cart, the price you’re paying, and see a list of what your gift recipient will enjoy during each month of their gift membership. If it all looks good, click the “Confirm your purchase” button and you are done! Your recipient will receive an email (on the delivery date you chose) or you can print and give the information to them in person to let them know you’ve purchased Audible credits for them to use!

How to Give Audible Credits as a Gift Using Your Own Unused Credits

The second method of gifting credits to someone (from your own stash of extra/unused credits) is a little more involved than the method above, but it is still possible. If you have an extra credit that you aren’t going to use, then it is a nice option to be able to give it as a gift!

However, you cannot straight up transfer an unused credit to another Audible account for them to use on any book they want. Instead, you will need to use your Audible credit to purchase an Audible title as a gift. If you know of a book your recipient is interested in, then this is a great method to use and is essentially the same as giving them a credit since they get a free audiobook out of it! You can follow the step-by-step instructions here to learn how to buy an Audible title as a gift with your Audible credits.

But if you don’t know of a specific book your recipient would want, it’s still possible to use this method. In cases where I don’t know what the recipient would like, I think it’s fun to create a “certificate” or some other nice way of telling them you are gifting them an audiobook of their choice. This gives them the chance to tell you what book they would like, while you still get to use your unused credit to purchase it as a gift by following these steps after they tell you which book they want.

Other Similar Book Gifting Options

If you decide that gifting Audible credits or using your credit to give a title as a gift isn’t the right choice for some reason, then here are a few other options you should consider:

  • Gift a Kindle Book – If the recipient likes reading, then giving a Kindle book might be something they would enjoy. Gifting a Kindle ebook is easier than gifting an Audible book, and you can learn how to gift a Kindle book here.
  • Kindle Unlimited – Another great option is giving Kindle Unlimited, which allows the recipient to borrow and read an unlimited number of books from the Kindle Unlimited library throughout the duration of their subscription. This is a fun way to gift them lots of books that they may enjoy! Learn how to gift Kindle Unlimited here.
  • Amazon Kindle Gift Card – If all else fails, a Kindle gift card is an excellent choice. This gift card features the Kindle logo and the recipient can use it to purchase Kindle books they want to read or anything else on Amazon. (However, gift cards are not eligible to use on Audible memberships and Audible books).

Audible Gift a Credit FAQ

Have a question about gift credits and Audible that wasn’t answered above? Here are a few frequently asked questions that may give you the answers you need. If you still have questions, feel free to leave them in the comments!

1. Can I gift Audible credits?

“Can you gift Audible credits?” is a very common question, and the answer is kind of a yes and kind of a no. As shown above, you can buy Audible “membership” to give to someone (which includes credits), and if they already have a membership this essentially acts like just buying extra credits for them. But there is no specific plan that allows you to just outright buy Audible credits for someone, because if your recipient doesn’t already have an Audible membership they will be given a normal month-to-month Audible subscription for the duration of the gift you sent.

2. Can I gift my Audible credits?

Another very popular question is “Can you gift your Audible credits?” The answer to this is also yes and no. Yes, you can gift your Audible credits by using your credits to buy a specific title to gift. And no, you cannot just gift the credit itself for someone else to buy any book they want.

3. If I buy credits for someone who already has an Audible membership, what happens?

If you gift credits to someone with an active Audible membership, they will receive the number of credits you purchased (1, 3, 6, or 12) at the moment they redeem their gift. Yes, they will receive all the credits at the same time, and their membership will not be extended or interrupted.

4. How long are gifted credits active for, and do they expire?

Credits you gift are active for a full year from the date they are issued. They remain active for a full year, even once the gift membership ends.

Hi Emma – Yes, they will have the option of continuing the membership when the gift subscription ends. However, if they choose to continue, then it will charge to their credit card on file (not to the credit card of the person who gifted the original subscription to them). If you want them to keep receiving it as a gift from you, you can always go through the gifting process again!

So Audible gets double payment for every month if the person already has a membership. That is a lot of money for a few books

    • Abi Johnson says:

It’s true that Amazon gets double payment, but the recipient also gets double the credits for books so it mostly works out okay. But if you know someone has a membership and it’s a deal-breaker for you to have their credits double up, then you can always choose to have the gift membership delivered after the end of their current subscription (you can schedule delivery for up to a year in advance) or they can wait to redeem the gift membership!
