What’s better than reading books? Obviously, the answer is “not much” or maybe even “not anything.” 😉 But if you’re an avid book reader, then one thing that miiiight just make it close to being as good as reading books is getting together with other book lovers to talk about books and celebrate all things reading. And that’s where the best US book festivals come in!

1. Los Angeles Times Festival of Books

If you’re looking for the largest literary event in the US, then the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books is the place to be!

This in-person event occurs over two days on a weekend, and in 2023 it’s taking place on April 22nd-23rd. (Come say hi! I’ll be there both days in exhibitor booth 186!)

It takes place on the University of Southern California campus, and includes all sorts of fun literary things including exciting panels, readings by cool authors, musical performances, shopping from exhibitors, and so much more! General admission is free, though certain panel talks may require reservation fees or paid tickets.

But as this event attracts around 150,000 people every year from Southern California and from all over the country, you won’t want to miss out on all the fun!

2. Bay Area Book Festival

Another large California book festival is the Bay Area book festival that takes place in Downtown Berkeley.

This event has 250-300 authors every year, and the festival has a focus on the power of literature and conversations that matter (with a special focus on justice and diversity). With the purchase of a $15 pass for 2023’s event on May 6th-7th, you can access all the author talks your heart desires (and that you can make it to with the constraints of time and without Hermione’s time turner).

This festival also has an outdoor fair with literary vendors, kids’ activities, and more that is totally free. So be sure to check it out and join other book lovers for a weekend of bookish excitement!

3. Library of Congress National Book Festival

Another of the best literary festivals if the Library of Congress’ National Book Festival. This annual event brings in bestselling authors for author talks, panel discussions, book signings and more!

The 2023 National Book Festival is happening on Saturday, Aug. 12 in Washington D.C. With over 20 years of the festival, it’s become one of the more prominent literary events in the US and you won’t want to miss it if you’re a fan of books, authors, poets, and illustrators!

4. Printers Row Lit Fest

If you’re looking for the largest free outdoor literary festival in the Midwest, then the Printers Row Lit Fest is for you!

Printers Row Lit Fest happens on the historic Printers Row in Chicago, which was once the bookmaking hub of the city. It’s entering its 38th year in 2023, and will take place on September 9th-10th.

More than 100,000 visitors gather over the two days of the festival for speakers and book-themed programing plus to shop from book exhibitors. You’ll find everything from old tattered books to newly published books at this event!

5. Texas Book Festival

The Texas Book Festival is another fun literary event you definitely want to look into! This event strives to connect authors and readers through experiences that celebrate a literacy, ideas, and imagination.

Taking place on November 11th-12th in 2023, this event hosts writers from all over the world and is one of the most prestigious (and longest-running book festivals) in the US. If you attend, you’ll be able to participate in author presentations and panels, book signing, activities for kids, and shopping from exhibiting vendors from across the state and country.

6. New Orleans Book Festival

When looking for fun book festivals, the New Orleans Book Festival is one you need to add to your list!

This festival takes place at Tulane University, and features both fiction and non-fiction readings, panel discussions, keynote speeches and more. The next festival takes place on March 14-16, 2024, so add it to your calendar now so you don’t miss out!
