How to Celebrate Hobbit Day

Looking for the best ways to celebrate Hobbit Day? National Hobbit Day takes place every year on September 22nd (Bilbo and Frodo’s birthday!) and it’s the perfect excuse to geek out on LOTR and Tolkien. So here’s how to celebrate Hobbit Day this year!

1. Dress up as a hobbit (or another LOTR character!)

Hobbit Day is the perfect time to dress up as a hobbit, or as any of your other favorite LOTR character. Whether you use clothes already in your closet (go for earthy tones if you’re dressing as a Hobbit!), or decide to step up your game by buying a Hobbit cloak, Hobbit ears, and more…this is sure to be a fun way to celebrate Hobbit Day!

2. Eat six (or seven) meals

There’s some controversy between the book and movie versions on how many meals a day a hobbit actually eats, but regardless of whether you go with the book or the movie it’s clear hobbits love their food! (If you’re curious, the book states Hobbits eat “six meals a day (when they could get them)”…while the movie gives a list of seven meals).

So if you’re looking to celebrate Hobbit Day, why not follow the Hobbits’ meal plan? Be sure to grab breakfast, second breakfast, elevensies, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner and supper! (Need ideas for these meals? Check out some sample meal plan ideas here!)

3. Make hobbit-themed food

Speaking of hobbits and their love of food, even if you don’t want to follow their exact meal plan you can still enjoy making and eating traditional hobbit foods! Grab a copy of An Unexpected Cookbook, or look for recipes you can make like Bofur’s Mince Pies or Bilbo’s Apple Tarts.

4. Read the books

What Hobbit Day celebration would be complete without taking some time to read the LOTR books? If you haven’t read them before, now’s a great time! Or if you have read them, it’s the perfect time for a re-read! So pick up your copy of The Fellowship of the Ring to start reading now!

5. Watch the movies

Similarly to the above, National Hobbit Day is a great time to watch the LOTR movies on your own or with friends! Pull out your set of the movies, or grab a set here to be ready to watch!

6. Host a hobbit party!

Of course, another of the best ways to celebrate National Hobbit Day is to host a hobbit themed party! After all, Hobbit Day commemorates the birthdays of both Bilbo and Frodo…so what could be better than throwing a hobbit themed birthday party, complete with hobbit party games, hobbit party food, and more?

Recreating Bilbo’s party for yourself can take a bit of work, but is highly worth it. Here are some great ideas to get you started on hosting your very own exciting hobbit party for September 22nd!

7. Buy LOTR gifts (for yourself or others!)

And last but not least, a fun way to commemorate Hobbit Day is to buy yourself something LOTR or hobbit themed that will make you smile. Or, if you know someone else who loves LOTR, then consider buying them a small gift! After all, that’s what a hobbit party is all about…and you’d be following in the footsteps of Bilbo, who handed out gifts at his own birthday party.
