What is Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon Prime Day is an annual summer sale event for Prime members only. It’s a big day for anyone who loves bargains and sales, as well as anyone who’s had their eye on tech deals, kitchen deals, jewelry deals, book deals, fashion deals, gaming deals, and so much more!
You’ll find especially good deals on Amazon’s own products— particularly Kindles and Fire tablets as well as items like Echo speakers and smart home devices. Often these prices rival or even beat Black Friday deals, so you won’t want to miss out!
It’s definitely one of the biggest sales of the season, and other retailers like Target, Barnes & Noble, and more also usually time sales for the same week to offer you plenty of exciting shopping options in the middle of July.
You do have to be a member of Amazon Prime in order to shop this sale, but luckily if you aren’t already a member you can get a free 30-day trial of Prime so you can shop Amazon Prime Day without having to pay for a subscription!
When is Amazon Prime Day 2023?
So when is Amazon Prime Day? In 2023, Amazon Prime Day is taking place from July 11th-12th.
It’s a huge extravaganza that will take place over these two days, and you’ll find deals that last the entire event as well as timed lightning deals that you have to be quick to take advantage of as they will sell out and time out quickly!
Do You Have to Be a Prime Member to Shop Prime Day?
Yes, you do have to be an Amazon Prime member to shop the best Prime Day deals.
Prime currently costs $14.99 per month, but luckily if you aren’t yet a member you can get a free 30-day trial of Amazon Prime that will allow you to join this year’s shopping event without paying for a Prime membership.
After Prime Day and when your 30 day trial is up, you can feel free to cancel if you don’t want to continue with Prime or don’t want to pay for it. You’ll just need to remember to cancel your Prime membership before it renews.
Is Prime Day Worth It?
There’s lots of hype surrounding Prime Day, but is it worth it? Should you shop the Prime Day sales?
There are so many different sales to choose from across a wide variety of interests. Not all the sales will be of interest to you, but if you’ve had your eye on something recently then this can definitely be a good time to get it for a discount.
Prime Day is especially worth it for Amazon’s own products like Kindles, Fire Tablets, etc. You’ll also likely find good deals on other tech items, household essentials, and even some exciting entertainment deals like these bookish deals!
I also highly recommend checking out the Prime Day deals on different Amazon services and subscriptions, like Audible and Kindle Unlimited, as they usually have some incredible deals on extended free trials or huge price reductions for 3 months of various services.

How Do Prime Day Deals Work?
If you’ve decided you want to approach the chaotic world of Prime Day deals on your own, there’s a few things you need to know about how Prime Day deals work and are organized.
There are several different types of deals and each one runs for varying lengths of time during the Prime Day shopping event. You’ll need to be quick to snap up some of these deals, depending on how long they’ll be available!
Here are the types to watch for:
- Prime Day Deals: There are some Prime Day deals that last for the entirety of the event. These deals are often listed on the Prime Day Hub as a specific percentage off, but with no time limit attached. In those cases, you likely have the entirety of both Prime days to buy at a discount.
- Lightning Deals: Prime Day lightning deals are flash deals that are run on various items. These are time-sensitive deals that are only offered for a short time and only in limited numbers. You’ll want to add these to your cart as soon as you know they want them, as they can sell out at any time or time out when the time limit is up.
- Invite-Only Deals: For 2023, Amazon has introduced a new category of deal that is invite only. These are some pretty incredible deals, but you’ll have to request invites ahead of time in order to be eligible to buy for the discounted price. Most invite-only deals need to be requested prior to the start of Prime Day, but some may have extended invite periods. You’ll need to go to the product page of each invite-only product you’re interested in and click the “request invite” button in order to be entered for a chance to receive an invite to buy.
Are the Prime Deals the Same on Both Days of Prime Day?
As mentioned just a moment ago, there are several different types of Prime Day deals. Some of these deals do remain the same across both days, while others change and start at different times across the 48 hours of Prime Day.
So if you’ve had your eye on something and it’s not on sale at first for Prime Day, it can be a great idea to check back in throughout the event to see if it goes on sale later on or on the second day instead.
Can You Return Purchases You Make on Prime Day?
Amazon is well known for their return policy, but can you return Prime Day deals you purchase too? Luckily, the answer is yes!
Items you buy during Prime Day are eligible for the same Amazon return policy as all the other items you buy on Amazon (keep in mind there are always a few types of items that can’t be returned—but you can find this info on individual product pages).
But the return policy is great news for Prime Day shoppers, as you can rest assured that if you buy something and it doesn’t work out you will be able to send it back for a refund!
