What to Consider Before Buying a Reading Light

There are lots of reading lights on the market, and it can be difficult to know how to find the best reading light for you. While we’ll be talking specifically about the Vont Clip-On Reading Light today, if you’re new to the world of reading lights then you should first learn about what to consider before you buy.

So here are 4 things to think about to help you find the best light for your reading style:

1. Brightness

One of the top things you’ll want to think about before you purchase a reading light is the brightness level you’re looking for. Are you hoping to read in bed without disturbing someone? Or do you need a brighter light source in order to read the text in books?

The best brightness level for you will depend on your unique situation, but as a general rule I highly recommend getting a light that has multiple brightness levels so you can try out a variety of options. (You’ll be happy to discover the Vont Clip-On Reading Light has multiple brightness levels!)

2. Color Temperature

Another light-related factor you should definitely consider is the reading light’s Kelvin Color Temperature. Essentially, the Kelvin Color Temperature is a measurement that tells you what color the light is (some common options include white, warm white, blue, amber/yellow, etc.)

You can find a full explanation of why Kelvin Color Temperature matters here, but essentially the color temperature matters because choosing the right temperature can reduce eye strain and stress (particularly when reading at night). But while lower Kelvin temperatures (yellow/amber lights) are often better for your eyes, some people find that the yellow/amber lights are more difficult to use when reading. So you’ll find that one of the more typical color ranges for reading lights is around 4000-6000K.

3. Power Source

Something else to think about is the power source of the light you are buying. The most common power sources are lights that are battery operated, lights that are rechargeable, or lights that need to be plugged into the wall.

Rechargeable lights are my personal favorite and what I usually recommend, as you don’t have to buy batteries (unlike battery operated lights) and you also have more freedom of where you read because you don’t have to remain plugged in. So this is what I usually recommend, but your situation may be different so it is really up to you.

4. Type of Reading Light

The last factor you need to consider, which is one I talk more in depth about in this post, is the various types of reading lights to choose between. The four main types are neck lights, bookmark lights, clip-on book lights, and clip-on lights for headboards, chair backs, etc.

Clip-on book lights and clip-on lights for headboards are some of the most popular types (and the Vont clip-on light we’re talking about today falls into these categories), but you’ll want to consider your reading habits to make sure you’re purchasing the right type of light for you.

Vont Clip-On Reading Light Features

White Vont Reading Light with a clip and flexible neck

Now that we’ve talked about what you should consider before buying a reading light, let’s talk about the excellent features that the Vont Clip-On Reading Light brings to the table.

First, this reading light features a large clip mechanism, which means you have plenty of choices of where to clip this light. It’s small and light enough that you can clip it to the back cover of a hardcover book and use it as a clip-on book light, or you can clip it onto a headboard, desk, back of a chair, or nearly any other surface. The clip can also simply be set on top of a surface rather than clipping onto anything.

This light also features 16 LED bulbs for flicker-free lighting, and the long neck leading from the clip to the light offers 360° flexibility. This amazing flexibility means that no matter where you place the clip of the light, you can easily angle the LED lights for the best lighting while reading.

Additionally, this light is a bright white light that measures in at a 5500-6000K color temperature and allows you to switch between three different brightness levels using the touch sensor switch. And even better—it’s a rechargeable light (charging fully in 1.5-3 hours), which means you can charge it when you aren’t using it and then unplug and take it with you to read wherever you want!

Features at a Glance

  • Wide clip to fit most surfaces
  • 16 LED bulbs
  • 360° flexible gooseneck
  • 5500-6000K
  • 3 brightness levels
  • Rechargeable
  • Up to 8 hours of use on one charge
  • Lifetime warranty

Review of the Vont Clip-On Light

After using this Vont Clip-On Light for a while, I am very pleased with its features and the ease of use. So I want to tell you a bit about what I love most about this light, as well as a few aspects I wish were a little different.

Does this light work well for reading?

Now, to start off, obviously the most important feature of a reading light is…well, to be able to read with the light. 😉 And in that respect, Vont’s clip-on light gets a full 10 out of 10 stars! The shape of the head and the distribution of the LED lights are in an elongated shape (rather than round), which seems to help the light reach every part of both pages of an open book. With this amazing feature, you won’t need to adjust the flexible gooseneck while you read but can instead simply set it up and then leave it in one place.

As for how the brightness levels work for reading, I love using the lowest brightness when I have the light clipped onto the back of a hardcover book. This is the setting I would also recommend if you are trying to keep the light low so you don’t bother someone else in the bed or in the room with you.

However, if you place the light on a nightstand or somewhere near you (but not directly on your book) then you’ll likely find that the medium and high brightness levels provide better lighting. I also enjoy using these medium and high brightness levels if I want a little extra targeted light on my book pages when reading in a room already lit with overhead lights.

What about the color temperature of this light?

Moving on to color temperature—this light offers only one option: 5500-6000K. This is a fairly bright white color, which some people love for reading but which is a bit more white toned than I generally prefer for reading before bed (I lean more towards liking the warm white or yellow/amber tones).

Of course, while certain color temperatures are generally better for your eyes at night, this is still largely a personal preference thing and many readers find they prefer a brighter white like this Vont light offers. So while warmer light may often be my preference, you may find that you prefer a more white toned light like this one in your own reading!

How does this light turn on?

This ingenious little light has a pretty cool feature for turning it on and off: a touch sensor switch! Rather than a typical button, you can easily and quietly cycle through the different brightness levels by simply touching the black square on the top of the clip. It’s quite fun to use, and I really do love the ease of use as well!

However, you’ll need to be aware of this touch sensor feature so you don’t accidentally turn it on when moving it or setting it up. Especially when I first tried this light, I kept surprising myself by accidentally turning it on when I grabbed the clip…but that could just mean I have the memory of a goldfish 😂

That being said, I have never accidentally switched it on/off or changed brightness while actually reading, as once you have it set up it is not easy to accidentally hit the touch sensor. And if you stay aware of the touch sensor square, then you shouldn’t have problems when you’re setting it up either.

What about the physical construction of this light?

What else do I think about this light and its construction? On the whole, I find it very sturdy and well-constructed while still being very lightweight, which makes it an excellent reading accessory.

The clip of this light is sturdy and solid, and seems to be able to clip onto surfaces of up to around 2″ thick (although about 1″ or less is probably the best thickness to target when looking for a surface to clip it to). In fact, this clip is so solid that I occasionally need to use two hands to open it (for clipping onto thicker surfaces), and I don’t have any worries about it breaking.

Because this light offers such a nice large clip, though, you’ll find it tends to fall more into the category of clip on light for headboards or the like instead of clip on light for books. It does work beautifully to clip onto the back cover of a hardcover book (and in fact this is one of my favorite ways to use it), but I do not think I’d recommend clipping it to paperbacks as many paperbacks are probably a little too flimsy to use easily with this light.

And last but not least, I have also been really happy with the flexible gooseneck. It really does flex up to 360°, but it still holds in place very well once you choose a position you like. I have not had any issues with the neck losing its hold or drooping while I read, but instead it has held up perfectly in place!

So on the whole, this is a very versatile light that will work for a lot of different types of readers. It has so many incredible features that make it a very useful reading accessory and one that will definitely come in handy as we head into winter and the days continue to get dark earlier and earlier!
